Embroidery is a journey into oneself
As a modern nomad, I have been absorbing a variety of traditions and cultures since the first days of my life. I have collected traditions, recipes, costumes and ornaments from all over the world.
My embroideries are meditations, I never know what the work will look like once finished. Making the first stitch and watching how the textile, floss and other decorative materials intertwine is the purpose of my art.
The process itself is my biggest inspiration.
MESSAGE
What is it that you wish to give us with your art?
I guess, mostly emotions but also a soft, almost silent message: to be open and non-judgmental.
Are we really not giving the right or chance to exist to something else? Something that cannot be explained by or compared to our previous experience?
I feel like the mission of my art is to free the mind from expectations about oneself, other people and events, to remain open, avoid labelling and accept the unknown.(From the interview on “Le Temps de Broder”)
STORY
What is your story with embroidery?
I am self-taught. I have always been processing reality through art. Since my early days there were music, dancing, painting, sculpture, fiber arts (mostly macrame and sewing), drawing and writing. Somehow my few previous encounters with embroidery didn’t really lead anywhere, I reckon it was so because I felt it was too imposing, with little space for creativity and improvisation – oh how wrong I was!
My latest go at embroidery happened in the beginning of 2020, when I decided to see how I feel about thread and textile and boy, it got me! It was the first time I tried expressing everything that I had accumulated up until then through stitching. It feels like it was growing inside me all my life, and at the right moment, with the first stitch, it just started pouring out onto the fabric.

STYLE & TECHNIQUES
How did you come to this particular technique, subjects?
The main idea behind the subjects is creating the new unknown worlds. Just like traveling to a new place, space, planet, and while all expectations and ideas are useless when you go to the unknown, the only way to go with it is to see, feel, accept and embrace it.I think it’s the only journey that I can take now (although, truly essential one) – into myself.
As for techniques, starting embroidery I imagined that my style would be very sharp, contrasting, ornamental, with sloppy edges and a more traditional, tribal feel – all my life I have collected textiles, costumes and ornaments from different parts of the world. Yet I discovered who I really am – all those intricate worlds, intertwined lines, tiny stitches, almost imperceptible details and repeating textures created by my “tweezers-fingers” as my friends call it, meaning that something is made of countless small details.

“Hello hello and welcome to Episode 19 of Like a tiny green podcast! This week I chat with Julia Lodyguina about how it's all about the journey of the process with her, and not about the finished piece, as well as how every stitch is the right stitch, and how she found she's 'pattern intolerant'.”

L’Essenziale è Invisibile - Virtual Exhibition by Lekoru Project (IT)
“Essential and Invisible”.
In my understanding there are two essential components of art and both are invisible.
First there is the journey of the ARTIST, the deep feelings and strong emotions; the idea, the story and concept; the pain, fear, love, acceptance, pleasure; every breath and heartbeat behind each finished piece.
Then there is the second essential part: the experience of the VIEWER, the sensations and reactions that arise while seeing a piece of art; the journey into oneself to process emotions and feelings; the spark, the Glow.
The visible parts of art would be pointless without these essential invisible elements.
